Recently I have crocheted an earwarmer for me (the pattern is here) and my husband wanted to get one as well. We bike a lot, so the thing is pretty practical for both of us. I found it boring just to crochet one more earwarmer the exact same way so I designed another pattern for him. Well, obviously the only difference between men’s and women’s earwarmer is the size (and sometimes decorations). So by just changing size you can make the earwarmer for a woman or even a child 🙂
You will need:
- 5 mm and 3 mm crochet hooks
- recommended for the bigger hook yarn of the main colour (I have grey) and yarn of a different colour matching the smaller hook (I took mixed colour, mostly blue)
- scissors
Abbreviations:
- ch – chain
- st – stitch
- sl st – slip stitch
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- FPtrc – front post treble crochet (US crochet terms)
- exFPtrc – extended front post treble crochet (US crochet terms), this stitch is explained in the other tutorial.
The Pattern:
Start with the main colour and 5 mm hook: 99 ch, join with sl st, 2 ch.
Finish every round with sl st and start a new one with 2 ch.
Round 1: dc in all ch (99)
Rounds 2- 6: (dc in next 3 st, exFPtrc in dc under next 3 st) X 33 (99)
Take care that every second round is inverse previous round: you always crochet dc over exFPtrc and the other way around. That will live you a “chess bord” ornament.
Now we make the ears:
Note, that here we don’t make sl st and 2 ch to change a round.
Round 7: 16 sl st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, FPtrc in next st, exFPtrc in next 4 st, FPtrc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next st.
Turn the earwarmer around and move to the opposite direction now.
Round 8: sc in next st, dc in next 5 st, 2 dc together in next st, dc in next 5 st, sc in next st, sl st in back loop of the next st. Fasten off, cut the yarn. The first ear is finished.
Count 28 st to the other direction from the first st of round 7. Here we start crocheting the second ear. Repeat Rounds 7-8.
The ears are finished!
Now change to the yarn of the second colour. Take the 3 mm hook and start crocheting from the first st of Round 7.
Make 2 ch to start the round.
Round 9: hdc in next 15 st, hdc in next 3 st together, hdc in next 5 st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 5 st, hdc in next 3 st together, hdc in next 42 st, hdc in next 3 st together, hdc in next 5 st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 5 st, hdc in next 3 st together, hdc in next 15 st, sl st (100)
Round 10: dc in next 14 st, dc in next 3 st together, dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 3 dc in next st together, dc in next 40 st, dc in next 3 st together, dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 3 dc in next st together, dc in next 14 st, sl st (102)
Now turn the earwarmer upside down. Work with the yarn of the second colour and the 3 mm hook. Insert the hook in the first st of the first round.
Rounds 11-12: 2 ch, dc in all st, sl st (99)
Fasten off, cut the yarn and weave in all ends. The earwarmer is finished!
